Traditional Saunas

Wood-fired and electric heater saunas built around löyly steam and high heat.

Sauna Cool-Down: Planning the Space Between Rounds

Traditional saunas heat the air with an electric or wood-burning stove and a bed of rocks, letting bathers control humidity by ladling water for löyly (steam). They run hotter than infrared cabins and typically require dedicated electrical service or a flue for wood models — a bigger installation commitment than a plug-and-play infrared cabin, but the closer experience to a classic Finnish sauna.

Indoor cabins are usually simpler to plan around (moisture-tolerant flooring, a hardwired electric circuit), while outdoor barrel and cabin-style units add weatherproofing to the list and, for wood-fired models, sidestep the indoor flue and building-code questions entirely. Some cabins ship with the heater included; others — particularly barrel saunas — sell the heater separately, which changes the real total cost.

We compare published heater output relative to cabin volume, insulation, rock capacity, wood species, and warranty terms — including whether the heater is covered under the same term as the cabin structure — across the indoor and outdoor traditional sauna kits we list. Buying Advice

Electric vs. wood-fired

Electric heaters are simpler to install and control; wood-fired stoves need no electrical hookup but require fuel and fire tending.

Plan for insulation and ventilation

Traditional cabins run hotter and more humid than infrared units, so vapor barriers and proper ventilation matter more.

Budget for the rock bed

A generous rock tray is what produces good löyly (steam) — don't undersize it to save on upfront cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hot does a traditional sauna get?

Traditional saunas typically run hotter than infrared cabins, often exceeding what most infrared units reach, since they heat the surrounding air directly.

Can I install a wood-fired sauna indoors?

Wood-fired stoves require a proper flue and clearances and are most commonly installed in outdoor cabins — check local building codes before planning an indoor wood-fired install.

What's löyly?

Löyly is the burst of steam created when water is ladled onto the hot rocks of a traditional sauna heater.
