Barrel saunas are the classic backyard option, and the 2-person size is the most compact way to get traditional heat outdoors. It’s a popular choice for couples and small yards.

This article answers one question: is a 2-person barrel the right size for you? For the wider traditional sauna decisions, start with the traditional sauna buying guide.

Short answer: a 2-person barrel like the Almost Heaven Salem needs about 6½ by 4 feet of level base and a 240V circuit. It’s ideal if it’s mostly you and one other person; if you often host friends, a 4-person barrel is worth the extra space.

The worked example: Almost Heaven Salem

Assembled size 78 × 47 × 75⅜ in.
Interior 75¼ × 39¼ × 69¼ in.

What the yard needs

A level base under the whole barrel or under its cradles: a concrete slab, flagstone, a wooden platform, pavers, or compressed gravel, never bare earth (Almost Heaven). Leave room on each side to assemble it; once built, Almost Heaven says a few inches of clearance is enough.

Plan the power run too. A detached outdoor circuit costs more than an indoor one; a 2026 installer guide puts 25–75 feet at about $1,500–3,800.

Who a 2-person barrel suits

You get the smallest footprint and the lowest price for outdoor traditional heat, with the heater included. You give up room: two people sit comfortably, but lying down or hosting is out.

My rule of thumb: if you’ll sauna with more than one other person even once a month, look at a 4-person barrel. The SaunaLife Ergo E7 seats four in a 71 by 81 inch barrel.

Run the numbers on the inside

The Salem’s interior is 75¼ inches long, 39¼ wide, and 69¼ high.

  • Length. 75¼ inches is 6 ft 3 in. One person can lie flat along it.
  • Height. 69¼ inches is about 5 ft 9 in. at the center. Taller bathers stoop when standing, and the curve brings the wall in toward your head on the bench.
  • Footprint. 78 by 47 inches assembled is about 25.5 sq ft, plus space in front of the door.

What it costs per seat, and to run

At $4,176 with the heater included, the Salem is $2,088 a seat.

Its 6kW heater draws 25A at 240V. At full power that is 6 kWh an hour, about $1.10 at the 2026 US average of 18.34 cents per kWh. The heater cycles once the room is hot, so an evening’s use costs less than the hourly figure suggests.

Run the numbers against bigger barrels

Barrel Seats Price Heater
Almost Heaven Salem 2 $4,176 6kW included
SaunaLife Ergo E7 4 $5,190 Sold separately
Dundalk Harmony 2–4 $5,977 Sold separately
Redwood Outdoors barrel 4–6 $6,299 6kW included

From dealer and manufacturer listings, checked September–October 2026.

Two of the larger barrels don’t include a heater, so their true cost is higher than the table shows. On a like-for-like basis, with a heater in the price, the step from the 2-person Salem to the 4–6 person Redwood is $2,123. That is the price of the extra seats.

What to plan for

  • Lead time. The Salem is made to order, with 6 to 8 weeks listed.
  • Two circuits. 240V/30A for the heater and 110V/15A for the light.
  • Control type. You choose a dial or an app-controlled heater when you order.
  • Weight. It isn’t in our data. Ask before you build the base.

Heat and steam in a small barrel

A small barrel heats up quickly, and löyly (water on the stones) feels intense in a tight space. Use one ladle at a time until you know how the room responds.

To compare the Salem’s bigger siblings and indoor options, see our traditional sauna comparison.

Bottom line: a 2-person barrel is the easiest outdoor traditional sauna to fit and afford. Just be honest about how many people will use it.
