New sauna owners face a small decision early: buy the core accessories one at a time, or as a kit.
This article runs that comparison with the kit in our catalog. For the full list of accessories and what to check, see the sauna accessories buying guide.
Short answer: a kit is worth it if you want stainless steel and need all three pieces. If you only want something that works, a cedar bucket and ladle plus a separate thermometer costs less.
What the kit includes
The Harvia Stainless Bucket, Ladle & Thermometer Kit has three pieces: a stainless steel bucket, a stainless steel ladle, and a thermometer/hygrometer. The handles are wood, which Harvia’s dealer listing says stay cool to the touch.
Those are the same three items Harvia’s KIP heater manual calls essential for a traditional sauna.

Run the numbers
The kit costs $205 more than the Dundalk cedar set. So the question is simple: are stainless steel and a thermometer/hygrometer worth $205 to you?
Here’s what the spec sheet won’t tell you. Harvia doesn’t list a price for its standalone thermo-hygrometer, but Select Saunas lists it at $38.88. Add that to the $119 cedar set and you are at $157.88, less than half the kit’s price.
The Harvia 4L bucket is the cheapest start at $31, but it comes without a ladle. Price a ladle before you count it as a saving.
When the kit makes sense
You get one order, matching pieces, and a bucket that needs no liner. You give up the lower total and the choice of each piece.
It also suits a new sauna that came with nothing. Check that first. If your cabin shipped with a thermometer, you’d be paying for a second one.
When to buy separately
Buy separately if you already own one of the three pieces, or if you prefer wood. Harvia’s manual has two care rules for wooden buckets: use a plastic liner to prevent leaks, and dump the water out after every use.
Run the numbers on a full starter set
The kit covers three items. A working sauna needs a couple more. Here are two ways to equip a new traditional sauna from our catalog:
| Item | Stainless route | Cedar route |
|---|---|---|
| Bucket and ladle | In the kit | Dundalk cedar set, $119 |
| Thermometer/hygrometer | In the kit | Harvia Thermo-Hygrometer, $38.88 |
| Kit price | $324 | n/a |
| 15-minute sand timer | $22.70 | $22.70 |
| Sauna towel | $56.80 | $56.80 |
| Total | $403.50 | $237.38 |
Prices from dealer listings, checked September and October 2026.
The cedar route comes to $166.12 less. The kit wins on convenience and on having one material throughout.
What stainless changes day to day
Care. Harvia’s manual says to scour buckets and dippers occasionally when a film collects, and to dump the water after every use. That applies to both materials. A stainless bucket doesn’t need a liner and won’t leak at a seam if it dries out. A wooden one can.
Heat. Metal gets hot in a sauna. The kit’s wooden handles are there for that reason. Keep a stainless bucket on the floor or the lower bench, where Harvia’s own example puts the air about 60°F cooler than at the ceiling.
Looks. Stainless stays the same. Cedar darkens and marks with use, which some owners like.
Check the size before you order
Our data has no capacity for the kit’s bucket or length for its ladle. The Harvia wooden bucket we list holds 4 liters, a little over a gallon, which is plenty for a session. Ask the dealer for the kit’s dimensions. A ladle with a short handle puts your hand over the steam.
One more thing the kit can’t do
A hygrometer only earns its place in a traditional sauna, where you pour water and the humidity changes. In an infrared cabin there is no steam to measure, and the kit’s bucket and ladle have no use at all.
What no kit covers
The kit has no timer, towel, backrest, or hook. Budget for a towel and a timer on top.
Bottom line: the kit is a convenience and a materials upgrade, not a discount. Do the math against a cedar set and a thermometer first.
