Voice control has spread from smart speakers to massagers and masks. On some devices it solves a problem. On others it’s a line on the box.

This article explains how to tell the difference. For the rest of the category, start with the home wellness equipment buying guide.

Short answer: voice control is worth having when you can’t see or reach the buttons. Otherwise, treat it as a bonus and don’t pay extra for it.

The clearest case: your eyes are covered

The Renpho Eyeris 3 is a heated eye massager. You wear it over your eyes, so you can’t see its buttons.

From the Renpho listing, checked September 2026.

You get a way to change settings without lifting the mask. That’s a practical use for voice.

A simple test

Ask three questions about any device:

  1. Are your eyes covered or closed while you use it?
  2. Are your hands busy, wet, or out of reach of the controls?
  3. Do you change settings mid-session?

Two or three yeses, and voice control helps. None, and it doesn’t.

A massage gun fails this test. It’s in your hand and you can see it. A button is as fast as a spoken command.

What to check first

Here’s what the spec sheet won’t tell you. The Eyeris 3 listing says “preset commands.” It doesn’t list them, and it doesn’t say whether the mask also has buttons for every function.

Before you rely on voice control, find out:

  • The commands. Preset means a fixed list. Read it in the manual.
  • The fallback. Can you do everything with buttons if the mask doesn’t hear you?
  • Noise. A device that plays audio through its own speaker has to hear you over it.
  • Privacy. Whether commands are handled on the device or sent elsewhere. Our data doesn’t say.

What you give up

You give up nothing by having voice control if buttons are there too. You give up reliability if voice is the only way to change a setting.

My rule of thumb: voice plus buttons is good. Voice only is a risk. Buttons only is fine for anything you hold in your hand.

Don’t let it decide the purchase

On the Eyeris 3, the things I’d check first are the ones the listing leaves out: battery life and warranty. A feature you use for five seconds matters less than how long the device runs and what happens when it breaks.

If your eyes are sore or dry rather than tired, see an eye doctor before buying a massager. Our sources don’t cover eye conditions.

For massage guns and other handheld tools, see the recovery equipment buying guide.

Bottom line: voice control earns its place on a device that covers your eyes. Everywhere else, buy on the specs that affect every session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is voice control useful on an eye massager?

Yes, more than on most devices. The mask covers your eyes, so you can't see the buttons while it's on.

What does the Renpho Eyeris 3 do?

It combines heat, vibration, and air pressure compression, with voice control and a built-in speaker. Renpho says the heat reaches 104°F within 30 seconds.

Does voice control mean the device is always listening?

Our data doesn't say how the Eyeris 3 handles audio. Check the manual or ask the maker whether commands are handled on the device.
