Cold plunging is easier with company, and some couples and training partners want to plunge at the same time. Two-person tubs exist, but they change the weight, the ice bill, and where the tub can go.

This article covers what changes with two. For the rest of the ice bath decisions, start with the ice bath buying guide.

Short answer: a 2-person tub like the ChillyGoat Matterhorn needs a spot that can carry about 1,425 lbs, more ice per session, and a plan for the shorter warranty. If you plunge one at a time, two single tubs or one larger tub may suit better.

The worked example: ChillyGoat Matterhorn

What changes with two

Weight. At about 1,425 lbs full, the Matterhorn is a structural load. On a deck, check it’s rated for that, or put the tub on the ground on a level base.

Ice. Two people add more body heat than one, so the water warms faster. Plan on more ice per session than for a solo tub of the same size.

Space. At 73 by 44 inches, it’s the footprint of a small loveseat.

Here’s what the spec sheet won’t tell you: two people rarely want exactly the same temperature or time. Agree on both before you plunge, and keep sessions within safe limits (Cleveland Clinic advises no longer than five minutes).

Alternatives

You get a shared experience with a 2-person tub. You give up flexibility and a longer warranty. A large single tub like the 150-gallon Icebound Essentials XL ($549.99) is lighter and cheaper, though tight for two adults.

My rule of thumb: buy a 2-person tub only if you’ll plunge together most of the time. Otherwise, take turns in a good single tub.

Run the numbers on the weight

The Matterhorn weighs 259 lbs dry. Its 95 gallons of water add about 792 lbs. That comes to about 1,051 lbs for the tub and water.

ChillyGoat lists about 1,425 lbs full. The difference, about 374 lbs, looks like an allowance for two people. So 1,425 lbs is the figure to plan around, and two larger adults could take it higher.

The footprint is 73 x 44 inches, about 22.3 sq ft. At 1,425 lbs that is roughly 64 lbs per sq ft. A ground-level slab carries that easily. A deck or balcony needs checking.

Run the numbers on ice

Cooling 95 gallons from 60°F to 50°F takes roughly 50 lbs of ice before any heat comes in from the air or from you. With two bodies in the water, more heat goes in during each session. Expect to top up sooner than you would alone.

ChillyGoat sells a compatible chiller separately. Our data has no price for it. If two of you will plunge most days, get that price before you buy the tub.

Two tubs instead of one

There is another way to plunge together: side by side.

Option Cost What you get
One ChillyGoat Matterhorn $2,995 One shared 95-gallon tub
Two Ice Barrel 400 barrels $2,299.98 Two rigid tubs with lifetime warranties
Two Cold Pods $239.98 Two soft-sided 85-gallon tubs

Two tubs let each person choose a temperature, and one stays usable if the other is being drained. They take more floor space and twice the ice for a full fill. Two barrels weigh about 930 lbs each when filled, on two separate footprints, which is easier on a floor than one 1,425 lb load.

You give up sitting in the same water, which for some couples is the point.

Bottom line: two in one tub doubles the weight on your deck and the heat in your water. Plan for both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there ice baths for two people?

A few. The ChillyGoat Matterhorn seats two in 95 gallons with built-in seating. Large inflatables like the 150-gallon Icebound Essentials XL can also fit two smaller adults.

How heavy is a 2-person ice bath when full?

ChillyGoat lists the Matterhorn at 259 lbs dry and about 1,425 lbs full. Check that your deck or floor can carry it.

Do two people warm the water faster?

Yes. Two bodies add more heat than one, so the water warms faster and you'll need more ice to hold the same temperature.
