Our Take on the Matterhorn Ice Bath

By

Short answer: the Matterhorn is a 2-person rotomolded tub with full foam insulation, molded seats with armrests, and an insulated cover, for $2,995. It is one of the few tubs here built for two. It ships without a chiller and has a 1-year warranty.

Does 95 gallons work for two people?

The tub is 73” x 44” x 30” and holds 95 gallons. That is the same volume as many single-person plunges, spread over a wider shell with two seats. Two bodies displace a lot of water, so the level rises to cover you both with less water than you’d expect.

Two people also warm the water about twice as fast. Cooling 95 gallons from 60°F to 50°F takes roughly 50 lbs of ice before any heat gain. Shared sessions will use more.

Will the surface hold it?

Dry weight is 259 lbs and the listed full weight is 1,425 lbs. Tub plus water comes to about 1,051 lbs (259 + 792), so the listed figure appears to allow for people. The footprint is about 22 sq ft, which gives roughly 64 lbs per sq ft at the full figure. Use a slab, or have a deck checked. Once filled, it stays where it is.

Ice or chiller?

Chilly GOAT sells a compatible chiller separately. Our data has no price for it. If two of you plan to plunge several times a week, get the chiller price before you buy the tub, and compare the total with an integrated system. Cold Plunge Chiller vs. Ice has the math.

Run the numbers on the warranty

One year on the shell and wall fittings. Rotomolded shells are tough, and several rigid competitors back theirs for life. Ask whether the cover is included in the warranty.

You get, you give up

You get full foam insulation, an insulated cover, and a skimmer net. You give up an included chiller and warranty length.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is an ice bath different from a cold plunge?

An ice bath is typically a simpler, uninsulated-to-well-insulated tub cooled with manual ice, while a cold plunge often includes a built-in chiller and filtration system.

How much ice do I need?

This varies by tub size, insulation, and starting water temperature — check your specific tub's guidance rather than a one-size-fits-all rule.
