How long to stay in a sauna has a short, well-sourced answer. The harder part is keeping track once you’re in the heat.
This article covers the tools for timing a session. For the other accessories, start with the sauna accessories buying guide.
Short answer: use a sand timer on the wall. A 15-minute one matches the guidance, costs $22.70, and has no battery to cook.
The numbers you’re timing against
Cleveland Clinic suggests beginners start with about 5 minutes, add time each session, and keep sessions to around 15 to 20 minutes. Harvia’s KIP heater manual sets the ceiling: don’t exceed 30 minutes in the sauna at one time.
So a useful timer shows you 15 minutes at a glance.
Why not your phone
Apple says iPhones and iPads are designed for use where the ambient temperature is between 32° and 95°F. The Finnish Sauna Society recommends a sauna temperature of 80 to 100°C, which is 176 to 212°F.
That’s roughly twice the top of Apple’s range. Leave the phone outside.
Sand timers compared
| Harvia Sand Timer | Almost Heaven Sauna Sand Timer | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $22.70 (The Sauna Place) | $54 (Select Saunas) |
| Duration | 15 minutes | Not stated on the listing |
| Build | Wooden frame, glass sides, orange sand | Wall-mountable; materials not stated |
Prices checked September 2026.
You get a known 15-minute count and the lower price with the Harvia. You get a match for an Almost Heaven cabin with the other, and you give up $31.30 and a stated duration.
To time a longer session, flip the timer once and get out before the sand runs out a second time. That’s your 30-minute limit.
The heater’s timer is a different thing
Here’s what the spec sheet won’t tell you. The dial on the heater isn’t a session timer.
On Harvia’s KIP heaters, the 60-minute timer controls how long the heater runs before it shuts off. The manual says to allow at least 30 minutes for the room to heat up. So an hour on the dial is half an hour of heating and half an hour of use.
Other ways to keep time
A wall clock outside the sauna works if you can read it through the door glass. Don’t plan on a plug-in clock inside. Harvia’s manual says receptacles and plugs aren’t allowed in a sauna room.
When to ignore the timer
Cleveland Clinic says that if you feel unwell, dizzy, or weak, you should leave the sauna and seek medical help. Harvia’s manual lists dizziness, lethargy, drowsiness, and fainting as symptoms of overheating.
My rule of thumb: the timer tells you when you must leave. Your body can tell you sooner.
If you’re new to sauna use and still picking a cabin, the home sauna buying guide is the place to start.
Bottom line: a $22.70 sand timer on the wall solves this. Fifteen minutes per flip, two flips at most.
