An outdoor cold plunge sits under open sky between sessions. What lands in it becomes work for the filter.
This article compares cover types. For filters, water care, and the rest, start with the cold plunge accessories buying guide.
Short answer: outdoors, get a cover that lists your tub model. Choose insulated if you run a chiller, and locking if children are around.

Debris
Leaves, dust, and insects end up in open water. All three covers keep them out.
That matters for the filter. Renu Therapy says its filters last 2 to 6 weeks depending on use and water quality. Dirtier water uses them up faster.
Insulation
An insulated cover slows the water warming up, so the chiller has less to do. Plunge says its cover reduces chiller energy load.
Here’s what the spec sheet won’t tell you: neither brand publishes how much. Treat the saving as likely but unmeasured.
Weather
Renu’s Total Protective Cover is a fitted outer cover in a vinyl-coated polyester that Renu rates against rips, tears, abrasion, and punctures. The listing doesn’t mention insulation.
You get protection for the whole tub and a storage bag. You give up the insulating foam of the $499 cover.
Safety
Only the All-Weather Insulated Cover lists locks: four latches with child locks, and four keys. It needs light drilling to fit.
A cover that lifts off isn’t a barrier to a child. If children can reach the tub, the locking cover is the one to price.
Fit comes first
A cover made for another tub won’t sit right. Check three things before ordering:
- Brand and model.
- Generation. The Plunge cover lists specific generations.
- Size option. Renu’s Total cover comes in separate sizes for the Cold Stoic and Siberian lines.
How to choose
- Indoor tub, no children: the cover is optional.
- Outdoor tub with a chiller: an insulated cover.
- Outdoor tub, children at home: a locking insulated cover.
- Tub left out all winter: a weather cover over the top.
My rule of thumb: buy the cover in the same order as the tub. It’s easier than finding out the fit is wrong in November.
If you’re still choosing a tub, the cold plunge buying guide is the place to start.
Bottom line: a cover saves filter changes and chiller work. Pick it by the job it has to do, and by your exact tub.
